Mexico: Michoacán has become the leading producer of strawberries in the country
Michoacán has become the largest strawberry producer in Mexico. It has 4,900 cultivated hectares and a harvest of 275,340 tonnes of the fruit, relegating Baja California to a second place with 37 % of the production, said the delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) in Michoacan, Antonio Guzman Castaneda.
After noting that the producers of this crop significantly contribute to the creation of employment in rural areas, he said that the state of Guanajuato ranks third with 7% of the production of the berry.
Michoacán exports 121,942 tons of their total production and distributes the remaining 153,398 tonnes to the domestic market. Baja California exports 33,999 tons and sells 50,996 tons to the domestic market, while the state of Guanajuato only exports 1,842 tons and allocates 7,370 tons for the internal market.
Michoacan markets strawberries mainly to Canada, Spain, UK, Northern Ireland, Japan, United States, Netherlands, Belize, Brazil, Chile and France, to name but a few countries.
