Germany: Most German potatoes from Niedersachsen

14% of all potato farmers is active in Niedersachsen. According to information provided by 'Landesbetrieb für Statistik und Kommunikationstechnologie Niedersachsen' (LSKN) farmers in this department harvested over 46% of the total German output in 2012. On average, a Niedersachsen potato grower cultivates a 21.4-hectare site.

Niedersachsen owes its position as main supplier to increased technical developments and modern techniques. Germany no longer relies on Dutch import, but is exporting herself.

To guarantee healthy crops, potatoes can only be cultivated on the same patch of land once every four years. This means that if a company wants to cultivate 10 more acres, it will in fact have to expand with 40. Good land, however, is expensive and scarce. Land consolidation has become a common practice, with neighbours using each other’s land.
