Spain: Good expectations for purple garlic campaign

Around 200 people, mostly women, work daily in the town of Las PedroƱeras, in the Spanish province of Cuenca. It is all about garlic here; a crop which, despite technological advances, requires a lot of manual labour throughout the year.

The great majority of these jobs are carried out by women. Las PedroƱeras is one of the few towns in which women are not above men when it comes to unemployment rates. In the Cooperative San Isidro El Santo, the world's largest in the garlic industry, work two hundred people on a daily basis. Over 60% of them are women.
