Germany: Stunt prices for clementines do not reflect the supply situation

According to the German 'Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft' (AMI), recent discount activities concerning clementines, some of which are putting the fruit on offer for less than a Euro per kilo, do not reflect the current supply. Retailers, AMI states, are too optimistic.

Production capacity in Spain is still impaired by deteriorating weather conditions. The harvest of clementines, in the main cultivation regions of Valencia and Castellón, shows clear signs of delay. Instead, retailers are being supplied with mixed varieties from other tilling grounds, like Murcia. So not only is production compromised, the less-than-great quality of the produce is causing tension on the market.

German wholesalers notice the effects of the diminished supply. The average delivery prices of Spanish clementines are markedly higher than last year. The average price of the last five years was surpassed several times in recent weeks.
