Rob Langenberg, Van Dommele:

"The best eating oranges come from Spain"

Opinions about the Spanish citrus crop are divided. Rob Langenberg of import company Van Dommele is convinced of a first class season. "We expect about 5% less clementines, but that actually does not mean much. We expect a similar season for oranges."

Best eating oranges from Spain
Is there much competition for Spain from other countries producing citrus, such as Egypt, Morocco or Turkey?

"I think not really, although recently more comes from other countries. My clients clearly prefer Spain. We have been working with the same shippers for 20 to 25 years, we regard reliability important. This is more difficult with other countries, mostly those do not have these long term relationships. The best Navelina's come from Spain. Therefore we mainly have eating oranges from Spain and some from Turkey. These are also nice and sweet, but arrive later, at the end of December. For squeezing we also offer Moroccan oranges." He mentions that in Spain good reliable addresses are important. "This year we handled a lot of Okitsu's, double the quantity of last year and we had no problems. With Okitsu and Clementine we use the brand Famisa and for oranges we have amongst others the brands Hartenboer and Famisa."

Rob is well aware of the increasing cost of logistics. "But that is arranged by the shippers in Spain. The also look for Dutch transporters with return shipments to the Netherlands, which offer a cheap solution. At the moment we work with various packing stations, but we are still looking for one in the south."
