Julio Reche, Agrodolores el Mirador:

Spain: Good campaign and good prices for Murcia's courgette

The courgette season lasts pretty much for the entire year in Murcia, although between September and March is when production and sales peak.

So far, the campaign is developing well in terms of prices. Right now the price of first class courgettes oscillates between 0.80 and 0.50 cents. "We expect prices to stay at this level at least until January. From that point onwards, the weather and plantations will determine whether that situation changes or not," explains Julio Reche, marketer of Agrodolores el Mirador.

Agrodolores el Mirador acts as an intermediary between producers and their clients, whether it is central markets, exporters or small distributing firms. "We meet every need either party may have, providing them with counselling, transport, trust, etc.," says Reche.

Among other products, the courgette varieties that predominate in their warehouses are Berula, Brillante, Mástil and Casiope, depending on whether the plantations are open ground or greenhouse-based. "We are also introducing a new variety: Vitulia."

Regarding production volumes, this year they expect the same amount of kilos as last season or even a little more, since greenhouse plantations are slightly on the rise. Regarding open ground production, it has decreased a little. "We do not know how long it will last because of the rains and low temperatures," he says.

Most of the produce goes to the national market, although a small percentage is also exported overseas.
