Germany: Developments in organic cultivation

Turnovers of organic produce in Germany went up with 10% last year. This according to a recent survey on the organic sector by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI). The rise was mostly due to animal products. Dairy, eggs and vegetables went up while grain and oil seeds declined.

Organic vegetables was one of the more profitable sectors in 2011. The acreage expanded to 10%. Main performer was the carrot, followed by asparagus and onion.

A total of 22,506 organic farms are working a 1,015 million hectares, making 7.7% of all farms of organic nature.
