Belgium: Pink Lady re-enters the stage at Van Dijk Foods

The Pink Lady season has started and the first shipments arrived this week at Van Dijk Foods Belgium. According to Stijn Weckx the quantities are modest so far: the real volumes are expected to roll in next week. “Color and quality are good this year,” he says. “Sizes are slightly higher, especially in Italy. The trees over there didn’t bear as much fruit, allowing the apples to grow bigger in size. We expect produce coming from France to be better suited for retail. We mostly supply supermarkets and wholesalers.”

“Of course we are positive about the coming season, but you never quite know how things will turn out. Crops were smaller this year, probably due to the weather, and supply is on the small side. It differs per region though. Some of them are dealing with a 15% drop.”

Stijn says prices are higher. “These are usually set when the season starts, but start fluctuating later in the year. Demands though, are on the rise, so we’ll see what happens.”
