US: Good sweet potato harvest under way
Sweet potato growers are in the middle of the harvesting phase of what evidently is a good crop of the tubers. “I haven’t heard of anybody complaining,” said Extension Service Horticulture Agent Howard Wallace. Columbus County growers set out 1,483 acres of sweet potatoes this year, placing the county in the top 10 in the state in sweet potato production. The Columbus County Community Farmers Market observed Sweet Potato Day last Saturday at the market, and market manager Carol Shuman said the tasty tuber will be for sale at market Saturday “to go along with the fall greens that will be available.” The sweet potato is probably the most nutritious vegetable grown in the South, loaded with needed vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and low in fat.
