Spain: Attractive market for Spanish kiwi, says Zespri

Zespri thinks the Spanish market is possibly an attractive outlet for kiwi fruit. This is according to Enrique Guio, responsible for exploring foreign territory for Zespri. Guio thinks the kiwi is completely integrated in Spain's daily life and fully belongs to people's everyday consumption. "The Spanish have long since accepted the fruit as an ordinary fruit, instead of an exotic one."

According to data, Spain is one of the top buyers of kiwis in Europe, with a total of 29%, representing some 57 million kilos.

"In Spain they consume fruit in much larger quantities, and those include kiwis," says Guio. Sales have risen to 87% in the last ten years, a rise that is expected to continue. The green variety is still the most popular, although the gold one is gaining ground.
