Expert warns that this disease affects fruit shipments

DR: Black Sigatoka, terror for banana export

The Northwest, especially in the Mao and Montecristi area, as well as Azua are of great potential for banana export and is where the highest incidence of black sigatoka is registered. Disease that attacks the plantations and according to French expert Eric Bureau, is causing problems for the marketing of this agricultural sector in foreign markets.

Bureau, of the Total Group of France, said that the Northwest is the largest area
of banana production for export in the country, noting that the Dominican Republic has around 350,000 cultivated areas with weekly export of 300,000 to 400,000 boxes, 55% for organic bananas.

Bureau was a researcher at the Research & Cooperation Center for Agricultural of France (CIRAD) and participated in the design of biological warning system used to
combat sigatoka.

He said that technicians from private companies and governments meet regularly in work groups, in various conferences worldwide, in search of solutions to combat
disease using the best products possible, since they say that a misused product does give results.

The last meeting was held in March in Miami, with the work group FRAC (Fungicide Resistance Action Committee). "The idea is to search together on how to improve, optimize the combat agoinst the sigatoka," said the specialist, who noted that this disease caused by fungi, becomes resistant to some products very quickly.
