According to durian grower Yeap Gaun Fong, the prolonged hot weather in Malaysia has not only caused low demand for durians; it also resulted in lower production of the fruits. Yeap said that the harvest for durian this season is 30 per cent lower compared with last year. “The hot weather is the main reason why people eat less durians. We had many visitors but they only bought one or two fruits…they said that the weather was too hot to consume many durians.”
He said that the prices for the king of fruits have also dropped for the past two weeks due to low demand. Yeap, who owns six durian plantations across Penang, added that there has been about a 50 per cent of price drop this season compared with last year.
