Very good Memorial Day push for sweet corn

Sweet corn harvest in Bell Glade, Florida is wrapping up. “The spring deal here usually finishes up around Memorial Day,” says Geoff Taft, Sales Manager with Pioneer Growers. “Monday and Tuesday of this week were big shipping days for Memorial Day, and it has been a very good push for us,” he added. Sweet corn is a staple item at Memorial Day barbecues.

It has been a steady sweet corn season out of Florida, which started back in November. “From Bell Glade, we moved to Homestead, FL late December and then back to Bell Glade in March,” commented Taft. The Florida deal is about to finish up, except tray packs corn will go until the 4th of July.

From Florida, sweet corn harvest transitions to Bainbridge, Georgia. “We started in the Bainbridge area in the second week of May and will go all the way through July 15th or maybe the 20th,” said Taft, which includes the 4th of July holiday. The crop ended up being very good in both states. “There were some weather issues like storms and freezes earlier in the season, but they didn’t impact the crop.”

Sweet corn from Pioneer Growers is distributed nationwide. “We go as far west as California, but also ship into the East Coast, Midwest as well as Canada.” All in all, it has been a good season. Once Bainbridge, GA finishes up Pioneer Growers works with partners in Indiana, New York, and Delaware during the summer months to provide supplies almost year-round.
