With nearly 25 years of experience in food and agriculture, Chris recently joined Changtoon Trading Co., Ltd. as CEO and export sales director. The company specializes in producing and exporting various exotic fruits, including durian, mangosteen, and longan. Chris's company owns an orchard for durian and mangosteen but also works with other growers in the area to meet the high demand for these fruits.
Durian inspection and harvesting
The company values the relationship between growers, packers, and exporters and works closely with them to ensure the highest quality of produce. Currently, Chris's company has received orders from China for 100 containers and 20 containers from Hong Kong for its fresh durian exports. They are expecting even more orders before mid-April.
The official harvest for Monthong durian, the most common variety, starts on April 15th in the East of Thailand. This marks the beginning of the season, which runs from April to June. Chris is excited about the upcoming season as it is the fourth year of exporting durian, and they are expecting more orders than ever before: “We focus is on providing high-quality produce to our customers, which is especially important as the Thai durian market faces competition from Vietnam and Laos. Our team will work hard to ensure that the fruit meets the highest standards of quality”. Main durian varieties include Monthong, Kradumthong and Chanee.
Chris is sharing her experience working with durian: “Despite the changing climate, durian production has become more profitable for growers, who have extended their production. However, the changing climate has also led to less production per tree due to heavy rains and unpredictable weather patterns. Recently, small storms have caused damage to the orchards and growing fruit.”
She continues that in recent years, Chinese consumers have created a significant market for durian: “Thai exporters have promoted the fruit extensively to cater to the growing demand.”
The middle of April marks the big start of the durian season for Eastern Thailand. Chris's company is awaiting payments from consumers to block containers in the orchards, and many Chinese buyers are visiting packing houses and durian orchards during these weeks. Overall, there is a lot of excitement for the upcoming season, and Chris's company is poised to deliver high-quality produce to its customers.
