Polish farmers warn about apple market price drop

Despite the increase in the supply of apples to the countries of Southeast Asia and Latin America, Polish growers could not fully compensate for the loss of the market for their fruits in Russia. According to Miroslav Maliszewski, president of the Union of Polish Horticulturalists, the governments of the country and the European Union should compensate for the increased costs to gardeners, otherwise the development of the industry will stop.

According to an industry representative, the sale of apples to Russia formed the basis for the economic well-being of Polish horticultural enterprises. After the export ban, gardeners tried to enter the Egyptian market. Now this country is supplied with about 160 thousand tons of apples per year. However, in the fall of 2022, the Central Bank of Egypt limited the ability to exchange local currency for dollars and euros, as a result of which trade operations were suspended for several months, and Polish gardeners again suffered losses.

The markets of Southeast Asia and Latin America are considered promising. However, the growth of deliveries in these directions does not allow to completely replace sales to the Russian market.

Another problem for Polish apple producers is the sharp rise in energy prices. With low product prices and rising costs, producers are left with zero profit, the head of the Union of Gardeners notes.
