E-commerce continues to grow in the EU
Online shopping continues to grow in the EU, as data from the latest annual survey on the use of ICT in households and by individuals shows. In 2022, 91% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU had used the internet, 75% of whom had bought or ordered goods or services for private use. The proportion of e-shoppers grew from 55% in 2012 to 75% in 2022, an increase of 20 percentage points (pp). The highest shares of internet users who bought or ordered goods or services over the internet in 2022 were recorded in the Netherlands (92%), Denmark (90%) and Ireland (89%).

SPAR Spain partner Fragadis grows its retail presence
SPAR Spain retailer Fragadis, operating in the East of Spain, identified and responded to a need for larger supermarkets in its territory. The retailer opened four EUROSPAR Supermarkets in 2022 and another EUROSPAR store on 1 February 2023. All stores include butchery and delicatessen counters plus fresh sections with regional fruit and vegetables.

One quarter of British shoppers struggling as grocery price inflation goes above 17% for the first time
Grocery price inflation rose again to reach 17.1% in the four weeks to 19 February 2023, the highest level ever recorded by Kantar. Overall take-home grocery sales increased by 8.8% during the four weeks and by 8.1% over the 12-week period.

Britain's M&S lifts store worker pay by 7% citing rising living costs

Britain's Sainsbury's to close two depots, 1,400 jobs affected
British supermarket group Sainsbury's plans to consolidate five existing Sainsbury's and Argos general merchandise depots into three, closing two by 2026, in a move that will impact 1,400 workers, it said. The sites proposed to close are in Basildon, south east England, and Heywood, northern England.

Holland: Retail turnover over 11% up in January
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports for January 2023 that the Dutch retail sector recorded 11.3% year-on-year turnover growth. The volume of sales went up by 0.4%. Turnover in the food sector was up by 7.3% and in the non-food sector by 21.5%. Furthermore, online retail turnover decreased by 10.9%.
