The Texas Department of Agriculture and Texas International Produce Association will participate in this year's international trade fair Fruit Logistica 2023, held in Berlin (Germany) between the 8th and 10th of February. From citrus and watermelons to tree nuts and legumes, Texas will showcase the many agricultural commodities it produces and exports to fill seasonal gaps around the world.
Fruit Logistica 2023 is a leading platform for the fresh fruit and vegetable industry, bringing together some of the most innovative growers, producers, and industry professionals from around the globe. As one of the top 10 producers in the U.S. for more than 40 major commodities, Texas is a notable attendant. Some of the key export commodities from the Lone Star State will be exhibited in Hall 23, including Pecans, Peanuts, Citrus (such as Grapefruit), Organic Produce, and Watermelons.
“Texas is the second largest state in the U.S., with a land area that exceeds that of many European countries. The size of the state coupled with its varied climates and soil composition creates an optimal environment for producing a variety of food, fiber, and other crops throughout the year. This allows us to export products and help meet demand in other countries that are affected by seasonal gaps,” shares Nikki Jackson, Program Director for International Marketing at Texas Department of Agriculture.
Pecans are the only major tree nut that is truly native to the U. S., with Texas being the top producer among states where the pecan tree originated.
Texas is the only state to grow all four types of peanuts (Runner, Virginia, Valencia, and Spanish), and the state leads in growing organic peanuts. Texas peanuts are high oleic peanuts, which provides health benefits and longer shelf stability.
Over the last century, Texas’s rich soil, temperate climate and moderate rainfall have helped growers and researchers in the state to develop uniquely Texan produce, including red grapefruit and the TX1015 sweet onion. The state is the country’s top producer of watermelon and second in carrots and pumpkins. It is also a major grower of grapefruit, oranges, melons, peppers, cabbages, cucumbers, mushrooms and spinach.
