Xenia® pear: A new club variety on the German market

DOSK announces exclusive German trademark rights for xenia pear at the Fruchtwelt trade fair

At the Fruchtwelt Bodensee trade fair in Friedrichshafen, Managing Director Dr. Wolfgang Kreiser of Deutsche Obst-Sorten Konsortium Ltd (DOSK) and xenia® Europe Manager Bernd Feenstra announced the exclusive brand license for Germany. The new club variety was presented during the DOSK growers meeting, outside the regular trade fair program. The exclusive brand and distribution rights have been held by DOSK since September 1, 2022.

Dr. Egon Treyer (Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst eG), Dr. Wolfgang Kreiser (DOSK) and Bernd Feenstra (Xenia Europa)

So far, DOSK is in charge of the apple club varieties Fräulein®, SweeTango®, Rockit® and Kissabel®. This means that xenia is the first pear club brand under the DOSK umbrella. Through the xenia, Managing Director Dr. Wolfgang Kreiser is picking up on the European pome fruit trend towards pears. With mark structure and marketing for Germany the Lead will lie logically at the Bodensee, since here the largest marketing volume within the conventional range as well as in bio quality is cultivated. The first xenia trees were planted at Lake Constance twelve years ago.

Strategic marketing concept for xenia club pear
Janina Bembenek, Marketing Manager of Obst vom Bodensee Vertriebsgesellschaft (OvB) and Dr. Inga Mohr, Head of Club Varieties, will work closely with DOSK and xenia BV in the Netherlands to develop a forward-looking brand concept for Europe. The aim is to put the potential of the club variety on a strategic footing, and not just for Germany.

xenia impresses retailers and consumers with its taste, consistency and storability
xenia is already a favorite of German food retailers and has secured its place on national fruit shelves thanks to its excellent storability, exceptional quality and outstanding flavor profile in two degrees of ripeness. More than twelve years ago, its product characteristics and very good yield security already convinced producer organizations such as Marktgemeinschaft Bodenseeobst eG and its members.

The xenia pear is the sweet product of a cross between the "Triomphe de Vienne" and "Decana N. Krier" varieties. The result is a crisp green pear with firm flesh and a sugary-sweet aroma. A xenia pear can also be stored for a long time at consumer:inside. In the refrigerator, it can be stored for two to three weeks with ease. In a fruit bowl, xenia pears can be stored at room temperature (18°C) for more than a week. During the ripening process, the pear becomes more yellowish and gradually acquires the melting texture typical of pears. xenia also impresses with the fact that it can be eaten juicy-ripe without dripping from the hand, with or without the skin.
