Traders standing firm despite threat of closure

Photo report: Düsseldorf wholesale market in transition

In Germany, the Düsseldorf wholesale market's future has been in jeopardy for several years. There is ongoing uncertainty regarding the market's relocation and possible closure by December 31, 2024. Every day that hangs, ever heavier, like the sword of Damocles over the nightly trading activities. The remaining traders have, however, dug their heels in and stay future-proof.

Clockwise: Hans Peter Deutschmann of Karl Klees GmbH, Wilhelm Andree, who, at 87, is the elder among the wholesalers, Azad Dagdelen of hospitality service Adam Reuter, and Hasan Atula, whose been managing Christoph Kotz for two years now.

A few companies, like GmbH en Adam Reuter GmbH, are gradually being transferred into the next generation's hands. At others, such as Becker & Wermelskirchen and Christoph Kotz, that has already been done. Also, a new business, Imifino GmbH, has found its place on the Großmarkt (FreshPlaza will report on this).

Rising costs and falling buying power means most traders reflect on a somewhat disappointing Christmas campaign. As in other years, January is still fairly quiet. At the product level, stored citrus and open-field vegetables - mostly German-grown - dominate the current supply. Soft fruit has increasingly been entering the trade since the turn of the year.

A series of articles about Düsseldorf's wholesale market and its future will follow soon.
