Holland: Vomar sees turnover up 30% in full-year 2022
Dutch retailer Vomar Voordeelmarkt has reported a 30% increase in turnover in its 2022 full year, positioning itself as the fastest-growing supermarket in the Netherlands for the sixth year in a row, it said. The group took steps to offer greater value to shoppers amid constrained economic circumstances, lowering the price of 300 basic groceries, including bananas, coffee, milk and meat products, at the end of August.

The British arm of German discount supermarket group Lidl said its sales rose 24.5% in the four weeks to December 25 compared to the previous year, reflecting new store openings and consumers’ search for savings in a cost-of-living crisis. Lidl GB said over 1.3mln more customers shopped at its stores in the run-up to Christmas.

UK: Worker co-op launches fruit tree nursery and heritage orchard in Sheffield
Worker co-op Sheffield Fruit Trees is fundraising to expand its work of filling the South Yorkshire city with fruit trees. The co-op runs a fruit tree nursery which supplies allotments, councils and commercial gardens with trees, as well as donating trees to community groups and organisations. It says it wants “Sheffield of the future to have fruit trees in every park and on every street corner”, and is now embarking on a project to further that vision.

Aldi to strengthen Scottish presence with £35mln investment

Coop Switzerland has posted 7.3% year-on-year growth in sales to CHF34.2bln (€34.6bln) in its financial year 2022. The cooperative's retail unit saw net sales up by 1.6% to CHF19.9bln (€20.2bln). Coop supermarkets including Coop.ch reported net sales of CHF11.6bln (€11.8bln), corresponding to an increase of 8.8% compared to full-year 2019, before the pandemic.

Costco’s Canadian sales up in December
Costco reported net sales of $23.8bln for the month of December, up 7% from $22.24bln last year. The club’s sales were up 4.7% in Canada, while overall e-commerce sales fell 6.4%. Net sales for the 18-week period totalled $82.16bln, up 7.6% from $76.34bln last year.
