VBT figures week 47

First bunches from fall cultivation hit Belgian market, tomato prices decreased slightly

Growers that currently hold tomato cultivation in their greenhouses, hope for good prices. In that respect it's not yet going well. The first harvest from fall cultivation wasn't paid well. The mid-price for tomatoes on the vine (TOVs) even decreased slightly according to clock prices of the Association of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives (VBT).

With an average price of over 71 euro cent per kilo, the mid-price is found to be below the five-year average. The price for loose tomatoes is slightly higher, with an average of 75 euro cent throughout week 47, but here, too, the price is lower than the week before. The anticipated price increase towards Christmas and 2023 is still absent.

The TOV figures for the past years up to 2015 show that prices virtually always start to rise from week 47 on. The only exception was 2015, when the TOV prices even decreased slightly afterwards.

Still, cucumber prices are still on the rise. In week 47 the average unit price equalled 72.7 euro cent. Bell peppers, unfortunately, were nowhere to be found in the clock price overview of the VBT. Lettuce varieties were, however. Their prices rose in general in week 47. The price for Lollo Rosso from the glasshouse did decline a little, but with an average of 62 euro cent per unit it exceeds the harvest of all other varieties by far.

Finally, the mid-price of strawberries rose somewhat to over 6.5 euros per kilo. A kilo of Elsanta yielded a little over 7 euros.
