Chinese red pomelos are popular in Vietnam

According to VnExpress, because of low prices, Chinese red pomelos are quickly out of stock in Vietnam. Chinese red pomelos sell for 30,000-50,000 VND (¥8.5-14 /piece) each, which is half of last year's price and cheaper than Vietnam's pomelo. This year's red pomelo is selling well, and the current price has dropped by 50% year-on-year.

Chinese red pomelo is in the peak season, so it is imported in large quantities by importers in Vietnam. The pomelo is pre-packaged in sacks, each wrapped in a red bag, which is taken away at retail, and the pomelo looks still decent. This pomelo is much cheaper than those produced in Vietnam. The price of Vietnamese red pomelo in peak season is 50,000-250,000 VND (¥14-70) a piece, and the green-skinned red pomelo is more expensive, 45,000-80,000 VND per kilogram (¥12.8-22.8/kg), but the quality is not the same as Chinese products.

Chinese red pomelo starts to market in large quantities from September to November. Wholesale sells several tons per day, the price depending on the number of buyers. If the purchased quantity exceeds 1,000 pieces, the sales price is 20,000-25,000 VND per piece (1.2 kg size), about ¥5.7-7 per piece.

Chinese red pomelo is actually just a new variety of pomelo cultivated in the past ten years, with high yield and economic benefits. Because this pomelo is seedless, it tastes crunchy, juicy and sweet. A few years ago, the price of Chinese red pomelo was high, so the import volume of Vietnamese traders was limited. This year, the price has dropped, and Vietnamese importers have begun to buy in large quantities.

Chinese fruit is in its peak season, and the market supply is abundant. This year, after many high-quality fruits from China entered Vietnam, they are more attractive and competitive than those from other countries because of lower prices and good quality.

According to the report of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, in the first eight months of this year, China was still Vietnam's largest import market, not only other semi-finished products and raw materials but also fruits and vegetables accounted for a large share. Vietnam’s imports of fruits and vegetables from China amounted to US$473 million, an increase of 74% over the same period in 2021, equivalent to an increase of US$200 million in absolute value. The market share of Chinese fruits and vegetables in Vietnam has also risen from 29% in the previous year to 37.6% this year.
