Vietnam durian makes an entrance to the new market

Durian grows in tropical regions around the world, particularly in the Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

The durians from Vietnam are of high quality and delicious, and Vietnam has remained among the top three exporters of fresh durians since 2014. Durian is grown in 54 areas across the country with the total area of 84,000 hectares, and in 2021, Vietnam’s durian production reached 642,600 metric tons, an increase of 15% over 2020.

Vietnamese farmers can only yield the durian harvest once a year. The harvesting season begins in May. The quantities and qualities of durians reach the highest point in June or late August depending on each region and type. Customers can find and buy durians at any time during May and September.

“China is Vietnam’s largest market for fresh durian consumption and after years of negotiation, China has allowed the fruits to be imported via official channels from July 12. This has paved the way for Vietnamese durians to enter this huge potential market in the future,” Rose from True Fruits told Freshplaza.

She continued, “In early 2020, when the world first began grappling with COVID-19, the Vietnamese durian industry temporarily faced a demand slump and manpower shortages. This was due in part to movement restrictions hindering farm operations. However, since then, the market demand for durian has picked up pace once again. The import industry in many areas such as Europe, Asia, China etc which sees huge durian market demand, especially for Monthong durian, is growing fast. ”

In recent years, the number of Vietnam's durian plantations has increased dramatically. In the past, durians were planted mainly in the Mekong Delta and the Southeast region, but now durian farms are expanding more into the Central highlands.

At this moment, Vietnamese durian has not entered China in large quantities, only a small volume has been exported to test the market trend. Rose continued: “But if the response is good, it is estimated that the supply of durians from Vietnam will rise once again. Vietnamese durian growers and packing factories have been thoroughly preparing for the time when the Chinese market opens for their products by participating in a training course organized by MARD to learn about Chinese food standards.”

When asked about the competitive advantages of Vietnamese durian, Rose said: “Vietnam has huge potential to become the second largest exporter of fresh durian to China, after Thailand, due to the fact that Vietnamese durian has competitive advantages over Thailand or Malaysia. such as closeness and good quality while the prices are similar to Thailand and Malaysia.”

The True Fruits company is a group of young people with enthusiasm and passion for fresh fruits, founded with the desire to connect large farms in the Mekong Delta together and produce products that meet Global standards along with modern packaging factories, and wide distribution channels in order to create a closed supply chain. The company is working its way to assist farmers to utilize the production and exporting processes to comply with the requirements of ASEAN, Europe, and other countries.

Additionally, True Fruits also connects with the farmers in order to make sure that our durian maintains high-quality standards and good sanitation for our customers. Although there were some market fluctuations due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, True Fruits company still managed to maintain the stability of its exporting quantity and price.

Besides fresh and frozen durians, True Fruits also exports large volumes of a variety of tropical fruits such as coconuts, pomelo, dragon fruit, and limes.
