Costa Rican pineapples see increased costs due to global inflation

As part of their responsibility to the associates and the persons that depend directly, and indirectly on the pineapple sector, the Costa Rican Chamber of United Pineapple Producers (Chamber of Piñeros Unidos) raised a concern to communicate what is happening in their country in line with what is happening worldwide.

"The increase in production costs of fresh pineapples boxes is due to the increase of primary supplies for carton boxes, fertilizers, machinery and fuel, which greatly exceed the value of $1 per box of the actual price. Those increases have been endured by the Costa Rican growers during 2022 without passing over the increased cost to end markets.

Unfortunately, this situation is not sustainable for 2023, since the market very probably will be regulated up, with the objective of protecting the industry, the social sustainability, and environmental systems and of course the work of many families that depend on such activity directly or indirectly in Costa Rica.

It is important to highlight that the pineapple sector of the north zone  of Costa Rica accounts for around 16 000 direct jobs and 46 000 indirect jobs according to government statistics.

The Chamber of Piñeros Unidos are a cluster of producers of pineapples from the north zone of Costa Rica, who represent a volume of 60 million boxes per year and represent 70% of the independent producers of the north zone.

All the above information is mentioned with the goal of keeping all the actors in the pineapple field, nationally and internationally, informed. Especially those who, day to day, enjoy the delicious flavor of the Costa Rican pineapples."
