Throughout 2022, France experienced four heatwaves and a drought. Potato crops have suffered in France throughout 2022, with the harvest between July and September deemed 'catastrophic' by experts from the National Union of Potato Producers (UNPT). The UNPT estimated that nearly 1.5 million tons could be lost on French soil, a drop of at least 20 percent compared to the average of the last twenty years.
Geoffroy d'Evry, a farmer in the Oise region and president of the UNPT: "In the memory of any potato grower in the north of France, we have never experienced a situation like this."
The Légumes de France federation has also estimated losses of between 25 percent and 35 percent in the production and yield of vegetables. Jacques Rouchaussé, president of Légumes de France, said that some sowings have also been postponed to prevent the seeds from burning due to the heat: "We are therefore likely to have delays in the production of turnips, carrots, and radishes."
