Irish grower and importer Donnelly Fruit & Veg has received the first arrival of Belgian Conference pears of the new season. “We had the first arrival yesterday and the pears will be on the shelves on Thursday,” said Paul Hussey, Senior Trading Manager at the company.
Donnelly’s will receive 25 tons of Conference pears a week, which will be supplied to Aldi.

“Quality is looking good; sizing is a bit smaller than normal due to the high temperatures seen in Belgium this summer. The growers were fast to react to the dry conditions through effective irrigation methods, so the effects are minimum, and we are looking forward to the season.”
Paul said sales should be good as the arrivals coincide with the Irish schools going back after the summer break. Donnelly’s is also looking forward to the arrival of Rocha pears from Portugal next week.
At the moment Ireland does not grow domestic pears, "Donnelly’s are working in conjunction with an Irish apple grower in a trial of Conference pears in County Wexford. Hopefully, we may have some reward next year."
