Cornelia Grips from Cartomat on sustainable packaging concept CartoPaper

"The carrots are proven to stay fresh longer than in PE bags"

Almost four years ago, the then brand-new CartoPaper packaging concept was presented for the first time at Potato Europe. Both in Germany and abroad, the sustainable paper packaging from Cartomat has since been able to establish itself as a high-performance and contemporary solution. The areas of application have also been significantly expanded in recent years, says Cornelia Grips, Managing Director of the Willich-based company.

Originally, the process was developed for use on vertical form fill and seal machines, especially for packaging potatoes in line with market requirements. In the meantime, the packaging is suitable for any vertical as well as horizontal packaging machines, Ms. Grips emphasizes. "Bags from 500g to 2.5kg in packaging shapes can be produced without any problems. Regardless of the application, cartoPaper ® remains 100% recyclable and compostable."

Recently, the paper packaging has been designed to have an integrated cellulose viewing window, which Grips says is yet another unique selling point. "Compared to the usual viewing window with netting, the use of cellulose enables an optimal view of the product, which is highly suitable for premium potatoes, for example."

Hans and Cornelia Grips are the driving forces behind the successful CartoPaper monopackaging. The process is now used for packaging nuts and tomatoes as well.

Growing interest from the carrot industry
Not just for potatoes and onions, but also for carrots, CartoPaper has rapidly gained in importance, Ms. Grips continues. "Based on extensive testing, we have been able to determine several times that CartoPaper is also optimal for packaging all types of food carrots in a way that is suitable for the market. The carrots remained fresh and crisp for up to three weeks at room temperature. That's the kind of discovery retailers like to consider."

The key to success undoubtedly lies in the material and its special refinement at cartomat, Grips further emphasizes: "The paper is very resistant to wetness as well as tearing and does not have a positive effect on product quality. This is because our paper is particularly stable as well as dense due to its long-fiber structure and thus regulates the moisture of the carrots very well. Accordingly, the quality of the products is proven to stay fresh longer than in PE bags."
