"Export price of Chinese garlic is slightly lower than last year, but the onion price doubled"

Fresh Chinese garlic enters the domestic and export market every year between June and August. Around 70%-80% of the supply volume comes from Jinxiang in Shandong.

"This year the overall product quality is better than last year and the domestic sales conditions are great. The price is slightly lower than last year, but in general stable." This is according to David Zheng of Jining Martin International Trade Co., Ltd. He recently shared his insights in the garlic and onion market.

"This year the price of garlic is slightly lower than last year. The production volume increased, so market supply exceeds market demand. However, the overall product quality is stable. The garlic is rather large this year. The percentage of large garlic (with a diameter between 4.5-6.5 cm) is higher than in previous years."

The export conditions of Chinese garlic are related to the domestic sales conditions. According to David, this year the export price is 1,000 yuan [145.13 USD] per ton lower than last year. That is a price drop of 15%-20%. One of the reasons for this development is a bigger production volume. Another reason is the ongoing pandemic and its impact on the global market. Demand for garlic declined because many restaurants either closed or operate below max capacity.

In addition to garlic, Jining Martin International Trade also sells onions in the international market.

"There are various onion production areas distributed across China. They all supply the market at different times. Current supply comes from Gansu. These yellow onions rank among the best in China in terms of product quality," said David.

Last year the price of yellow onions was rather low at 0.3-0.5 yuan [0.04-0.07 USD] per 0.5 kg. A number of farmers already switched to different crops because the price was so poor. This year the price of yellow onions doubled. The current retail price is around 0.9 yuan [0.13 USD] per 0.5 kg. The product quality is stable and the profit margin is good.

Jining Martin International Trade Co., Ltd. was founded in 2002. The company primarily provides services for the plantation, storage, processing, retail, and export of agricultural products, including garlic, garlic shoots, onions, chili peppers, ginger, and apples. The company has been active in the export market for more than 10 years. Their main export destinations include Southeast Asia, the Middle East, South America, and Europe. They are currently looking to expand the number of clients in European markets.
