Peaches overtake watermelons as the most popular fruit in Korea this summer

According to the sales data of large supermarkets, reported by Korean media, from July 1 to August 18, among the fruits sold, peaches topped the list. In 2020 and 2021, watermelon and peaches ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in sales, but since the beginning of the summer, sales of peaches have increased by 22.9%, while watermelon sales have decreased by 8.7%.

The reason for this is the increase in the number of small households of 1 to 2 people in South Korea, which reduces the consumption demand for watermelons. As smaller households are less inclined to buy a whole watermelon, demand is shifted to smaller peaches, the analysis said. While overall sales of watermelons decreased, sales of small-size watermelons increased by 11.5%. In addition, the price also had an impact on the changes in the ranking of popular fruits.

The Korea Agriculture and Fisheries Food Circulation Corporation revealed that based on August 19, the wholesale price of each 4.5 kilograms of white peaches was about 20,000 won (about 102 RMB), a year-on-year decrease of 7.4%. Conversely, the wholesale price of a single watermelon rose by 27.8% over the same period. According to the analysis, the production and shipment of peaches have increased this year, and the price competitiveness has improved.
