Yesterday, Filipino onion producers gave assurances the supply of red onions will last until December. KASAMNE is a group of 10 farmer cooperatives in Nueva Ecija, where nearly 65 percent of the country's onions are produced. In an interview, KASAMNE General Manager Arnel Llamas said that based on the group's consultation with the Bureau of Plant Industry two weeks ago, there will be enough red onions in the market until the end of the year.
White onions, however, will continue to be in short supply. "We harvested at least 350,000 bags of onions last February until the middle of March. Of these, 50,000 bags were white onions," Llamas said. He said the white onions in their storage facilities were sold out last month.
