Chile continues to be the main supplier of table grapes in the southern hemisphere. According to the 2022 International Table Grape Market Yearbook published by Iqonsulting, despite being characterized by logistical difficulties, Chile has shipped about 602,000 tons (74 million boxes of 8.2 kg) of table grapes this season, concentrating a 31% share of the total sent during by the southern hemisphere this season.
Despite all the contingency, it had a 12% recovery in shipments over the previous year, when the heavy rains in the harvest period significantly reduced export volumes.
41% of the Chilean supply corresponded to red seedless varieties followed by white seedless varieties with a 28% share.
It's also worth noting that the new varieties continue to gain ground in the southern hemisphere's main exporters volume (Peru, Chile, and South Africa). The total volume of new varieties exported by these suppliers grew by 27% over the previous campaign and accounted for 57% of the total shipped by the southern hemisphere. Chile exported about 250,000 tons of new varieties (31 million boxes), accounting for 43% of the total exported by the country, the lowest participation of the countries in the region. (73% of South African shipments and 62% of Peruvian exports were of protected varieties). The three main protected varieties exported by Chile were Sheegene 13 – Timco (5 million boxes), Sheegene 20 – Allison (3.6 million boxes), and IFG 3 – Sweet celebration (3.3 million boxes).
According to the report, the main market for Chilean shipments continues to be the United States, with a 50% share in the volume shipped. This destination stood out due to the great logistical problems generated by the delays in unloading and fumigation of the fruit. The Far East, represented mainly by China, is the second market with the highest volume of shipments (22%). Europe is the Chilean table grapes' third destination market with a 17% share.
