Burger King Philippines struck by onion shortage

Fastfood chain Burger King Philippines has stated its operations are affected by a shortage in supply of onions in the country. Earlier this month, the Department of Agriculture confirmed that there is indeed a lack of supply of white onions in the market, but that it is already taking steps to address the matter.

Agriculture Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said the DA is considering importing white onion to fill in the demand. Senator Imee Marcos, however, is not convinced with the DA’s statement that there is a shortage of supply in white onions, alleging this is merely “a modus operandi” and a “same old story” .

“First, they smuggle. Then they create a shortage, and produce a legitimate import permit. By next week, I have no doubt smuggled onions will flood the market covered by a ‘legitimate’ importation order of gargantuan proportions,” said Sen. Marcos.
