The Federation of French Fruit Producers wants the irrigation ban lifted

Drought: French fruit producers in despair

France is currently suffering from a historic drought and French fruit producers are worried.

The high temperatures of the last few weeks in France are disrupting the current production and the trees have created their own protection mechanism to cope with the stress. As a result, caliber, coloration and ripeness are all affected by these high temperatures.

The lack of water threatens not only this year’s harvests, but also the upcoming season.

We are well aware that measures must be taken in order to preserve our water resources. However, it is essential to be able to adjust these measures according to the challenges, especially when the work tool is being threatened.

We also urge the French departments to lift their irrigation ban for fruit orchards.

While food sovereignty has become a priority, an entire sector of the French economy, already fragile, is now under threat.

We are counting on the prefects to react quickly and we are willing to work concretely on water storage with the public authorities.
