"Chinese sales volume of 'soy milk' pineapples increased by 40%-45% this year"

There is a pineapple variety in China that is grown on fermented soy milk fertilizer. The fermented soy milk makes the fibers and the core of the ripe pineapple so tender that the entire pineapple becomes edible. Moreover, the fragrance of the pineapple becomes much stronger too. The inventor of this variety established the brand 'soy milk' pineapple. Xiong Huai of the Hainan Guoneng Agricultural Technology Development Co., Ltd. recently talked about the development of the 'soy milk' pineapple brand.

"Most of the pineapples on the Chinese market come from the Philippines, Taiwan, and China. The 'soy milk' pineapple is the most tender pineapple on the market, as the entire pineapple is edible. Pineapples from Taiwan closely follow as the core is partially edible. The fibers of the Golden pineapples from the Philippines, however, are quite coarse. This year the Chinese market is closed for pineapples from Taiwan, which of course stimulated the sales of 'soy milk' pineapples. We also expanded the overall surface area devoted to the plantation of 'soy milk' pineapples this year and increased our production volume. And we organized an interview on CCTV to boost the market recognition of our pineapples. As a result, the sales volume of our 'soy milk' pineapples grew by 40%-45% this year," said Mr. Xiong.

'Soy milk' pineapples

"'Soy milk' pineapples enter the market in February and the supply season continues until late May. Last year the plantation suffered from cold weather during the planting season, which affected the size of the pineapples. However, smaller pineapples can ripen more naturally and can be harvested when fully ripe. The flavor is therefore even better than usual. The production volume was more or less the same as in previous years."

The cost price of labor, fertilizer, plantation, and transport increased this year, which pushes the price of pineapples up. "Take the 'soy milk' pineapples as an example. The purchase price was around 30% higher than last year. The current retail price of 'soy milk' pineapples is around 10-15 yuan [1.47-2.21 USD] per 0.5 kg, while the retail price of pineapples from the Philippines is only about 4.5-6.5 yuan [0.66-0.96 USD] per 0.5 kg. However, even though our prices have gone up, our sales volume still grows. This shows the popularity of 'soy milk' pineapples in the Chinese market."

Hainan Guoneng Agricultural Technology Development is located in Hainan. The company began growing 'soy milk' pineapples in 2012, and greatly expanded the overall surface area of the plantation in 2019. The plantation now covers an area of 107 hectares. The company sells pineapples under their own brand 'soy milk' pineapples.
