Thai rambutan is more and more popular and exports are rapidly increasing

Thai rambutan is becoming a new best-seller because the management and quality control of rambutan is relatively simple. The export volume of rambutan from January to May 2022 was nearly 10,000 tons, an increase of 248.33%. It is expected that the annual export volume will increase significantly and exceed 20,000 tons.

Farmers are starting to focus on rambutan exports due to the ease of production management and the level of quality that can be seen from the peel, which is different from durian and mangosteen. Rambutan is also very popular in destination markets, showing a growing trend in Vietnam and Malaysia markets. The profits from rambutan also make farmers satisfied, because the planting cost is not as high as other fruits, the risk is lower, and the rambutan is suitable for long-term storage. Although there will not be a sharp increase in export volume, it is more stable.

Thailand currently grows two varieties of rambutan, namely red rambutan and golden rambutan, with a total output of about 280,000 tons. Rambutan is becoming one of the popular stars in the market, with an annual export volume of 12,000 to about 15,000 tons, accounting for 5% of the entire rambutan production.

However, from January to May this year, the export volume of rambutan reached 9,437 tons, worth 177.25 million baht, an increase of 248.33%. The main markets are Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, and the United Arab Emirates. Exports are expected to reach 20,000 tons this year, an increase of 7%.
