"Minqin honey melons are delayed this year, but the production volume and product quality are stable"

Minqin county is an important honey melon production area in Gansu province. Minqin is located between the Tengger and Badain Jaran deserts. The unique desert conditions are ideal for the cultivation of melons. The honey melons from Minqin have rich fruit flesh, pure colors, and a sweet, fragrant flavor. Mr. Zhou Junlin of Shaanxi Guolemei Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., recently talked about current conditions in honey melon production areas.

Director Zhou explained that precipitation is scarce in this desert area, so the cultivation of melons requires irrigation systems. During the height of the agricultural season the Yellow River provides water for irrigation, but the sandy soil requires irrigation efficiency and water saving methods that emphasize moderation and control. "We started irrigation 10 days later than last year to optimize water usage, but that also means the melon harvest was delayed by 10 days. That is why our honey melons will enter the market slightly later than usual this season. However, the production volume is more or less the same size as in previous years and the flavor is excellent." The Minqin honey melons entered the market around the 5th of July and the supply season continues until September.

"Minqin county is located at an elevation of 1,400 meters above sea level. The area enjoys long sun hours and a significant difference in day and night temperatures. In addition, precipitation is scarce and the weather is shaped by two major deserts. Minqin farmers grow honey melons in sandy soil. These melons require small amounts of water and retail a lot of liquid, which makes them an excellent choice for desert areas. These conditions also make the honey melons particularly sweet," explained director Zhou. "There are many kinds of honey melons, including 'Red Gold', which is a variety unique to Minqin. This variety has a yellow rind and red fruit flesh, which is soft, red, and sweet. This variety received recognition as a regional specialty product."

"When the Minqin honey melons had just entered the market in July, the purchase price was around 20% lower than in previous years. However, the price fluctuated. Consumer power is weaker this year and overall market demand declined. Our online shop sells 2-2.5 kg boxes of Red Gold honey melons for 19.90 yuan [2.95 USD], which is 20%-30% lower than last year. The main reason for this development is the overall economic climate. Conditions are less than ideal. In addition, there is a lot of competition between online shops," said director Zhou.

Shaanxi Guolemei Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd. primarily sells honey melons via online shops and supermarkets, including Benlai Shengxian, Kuaishou, and Meituan. In addition, the company also participates in new retail channels such as livestreams.
