Hebei is one of the main production areas for export pears. The harvest of the new season has already begun. Mr. Xie Xiaowei of Hebei Gaoma Trade Co., Ltd. recently talked about market prospects for this season.
Trading companies have already begun to order the first pears to stock their warehouses. The overall flavor is not great, but the price is not bad. This is a good start of the purchasing season.
"The overall production volume of Hebei pears declined this year. That is mainly because the price of pear was low last year, and a number of farmers lost faith in pears, so they decided to grow different fruits or simply abandon their pear orchards. Some farmers went so far as to cut their pear trees and switch to more economic crops. That is why the overall production volume of pears declined," said Mr. Xie.
In the first half of this year, the sales conditions of Hebei pears were still quite good, but from March onward, the price began to rise because the volume left in storage began to run low. Owners with stock in storage were able to recuperate their investment.
At the moment, the sales season of old pears is coming to an end. The price is still rather high. According to Mr. Xie, "the purchase price was low in 2021 and the retail price high, so the profit was quite good. And product movement was smooth. The new harvest of early-season varieties like Green Jade, Early Crunchy pears, and New Pear no. 7 recently entered the market. The purchase price began high but then fell."
The purchase price of Crown pears dropped on the 11th of July, 2022. The purchase price declined from 2.8 yuan [0.42 USD] to about 2 yuan [0.30 USD]. In some cases the purchase price even dropped below 2 yuan. This price trend is very similar to the price of Green Jade pears, which suddenly plummeted.
Pear production areas supply directly to the market. Not only are the farmers unwilling to lower their prices, but traders are also afraid of a sudden drop. However, as the price comes down, traders with storage space will rush to purchase pears, and at that moment the price will stabilize or even steadily rise again.
Hebei Gaoma Trade is located in Zhao County, Hebei. The company owns a large pear orchard that covers an area of more than 333 hectares. They grow a variety of pears including Crown pears, Chinese white pears, Snowflake pears, Green Jade pears, White Jade pears, Round Yellow pears, Fengshui pears, and Xingao pears.
According to Mr. Xie: "Our pears were primarily sold in the domestic market in the last few years through a combination of online and offline sales channels. We are precise in our selection of pears to ensure that the requirements of our clients are met."
The variety of pears in the export market is huge, but the export volume of Crown pears is relatively large. There are several reasons for this situation. First, Crown pears are unique in that their supply season lasts all year. And the storage volume of Crown pears is rather big, which means that supply is stable.
When asked about export plans and expectations this season, Mr. Xie replied: "It is my understanding that among the multitude of export destinations, Hebei pears mainly end up in Southeast Asia. The new export season has only just begun, and the current price is rather high. How the market will develop depends on the volume in storage. I think that the purchase price will come down even further in the next few days. Despite general economic developments, our company survives well on our reputation and the product quality of our pears. We have a stable share of the domestic market. And we hope to further expand our export channels this year, so that even more consumers can enjoy our delicious, top-quality Chinese pears. As for export markets, we do not have a preference. We welcome all interested parties with open arms."
