ASEAN fruit dominates Chinese import market this summer

The Sango Fruit Trade Co., Ltd. is one of the fastest-growing fruit trading companies in China and abroad. The company has several branch offices in China in Shanghai, Jiaxing, Nanjing, and Qingdao. They are mostly concentrated in east China.

"We offer mature wholesale channels for every segment of the market and also our own stores for fruit retail. This allows us to reach consumers directly and gives us a sensitivity for changes in market trends. We can immediately adjust our operational tactics in response to market developments." This is according to Mr. Han Jun, head of domestic purchases at Sango Fruit Trade Co., Ltd.

Sango Fruit Trade has worked closely together with large fruit growers in China and abroad to supply the Chinese market with a huge variety of top-quality fruits, including Chilean cherries and US oranges. Sango Fruit can also guarantee year-round supply of melons and bananas.

"We dispatch our teams to production areas for inspection tours to guarantee that we always import high-quality fruit. Our teams purchase directly from the plantation.

"The fruit export industry has struggled for the last two years as the pandemic obstructed distribution and labor shortages pushed the cost price up. At the same time, the domestic fruit industry matured. Domestic fruit has gained much popularity in the domestic market in the last two years, especially because Chinese consumers have become much more careful with food safety during the pandemic. And that gave domestic fruit the space to develop further. Also, apart from fresh fruit, we also promote processed fruit products in the market. That is why we also work closely together with several large fruit processing companies," said Mr. Han.

This is the time of year when domestic and import fruits enter the Chinese market in large volumes. In the coming weeks, Sango Fruit Trade will primarily import fruits from ASEAN countries, including Thai mangosteen, longan, and dragon fruit.

When talking about fruit market conditions, Mr. Han explained: "In the end, conditions this year were more or less the same as last year. Our best-sellers include winter jujubes, watermelons, Shine Muscat grapes, Keitt mangos, and peaches. The sugar content of Shine Muscat grapes is rather low at the moment, because production areas in Yunnan suffered from several days of rain. The price consequently dropped. The current market supply volume is limited."

Sango Fruit sells fruit via wholesale channels as well as retail. The company has more than 50 stores throughout the country. In addition to import fruit, Sango Fruit also deals in domestic fruits, especially premium fruit products in Jiaxing and Nanjing. "We hope to establish close cooperation with new strategic partners in China and abroad, so that we can advance Chinese market supply of top-quality fruits and expand the variety of fruit in the market."
