This week, the season of peak sales of open-field cucumbers has started in Ukraine. The season for the sale of open-ground cucumbers, as with all early vegetables, began with a noticeable delay in Ukraine due to the occupation of the Kherson region, the area that usually has the largest production of early vegetables.
The cucumbers have begun to significantly go on the market in almost all regions of the country, and prices are in the range of 10-15 UAH/kg ($0.34-0.51/kg), which is on average 3.5 times more expensive than in the same period last year.
Key market players attribute this price difference to the occupation of the Zaporizhzhia region, which was the leader in growing cucumbers in open fields and film tunnels in previous seasons. To date, there is almost no supply of cucumbers from the Zaporizhzhia region. Also, the rise in the cost of logistics has contributed to the high prices for open-field cucumbers. Besides, it should be taken into account that the time for transporting fruits and vegetables between regions has significantly increased, something that affects the quality characteristics of vegetables.
