Agence Bio presents the data from 2021

Decline of organic sales in supermarkets but increase in direct sales and at small retailers

During its annual press conference, Agence Bio presented the 2021 figures for the organic sector.

In a context marked by the consequences of the sanitary crisis, with a decline in household food consumption (-2.28%), the value of organic food purchases has dropped by 1.3% compared to 2020. However, the sector continues to represent 13 billion euros [13.6 billion USD] and maintains a stable market share (6.63%) in the grocery shopping of French consumers.

The decline in organic sales in 2021 is not observed in all distribution channels. It is mostly seen in supermarkets (-3.9%) and specialized stores (-1.8%). But organic sales have strongly increased in direct sales (+7.9%) and at small retailers (+5.8%).
