Italian regional retailer Etruria Retail closed 2021 with a turnover of €238mln and a network of 321 stores. The company's turnover was down by €14mln compared to 2020, which was a record-breaking year due the continuation of pandemic restrictions. Miscellaneous goods accounted for 49% of sales, followed by cured meats and dairy products (23%); fruit and vegetables (13%), meats (9%) and fresh fish (6%).

French consumers 'making trade offs' as prices rise, says Kantar
French consumers are increasingly making trade offs while shopping as they attempt to balance their budgets, a new study by Kantar has found. Faced with record inflation, shoppers have reduced their spending on high ticket items, and indeed have even cut back on traditional fresh produce in some instances, Kantar said.

Growth slowdown expected for European e-commerce
Even when shoppers can visit physical stores again, they continue to buy online: despite the lifting of most Covid measures and the UK’s departure from the European single market, e-commerce sales in Europe grew 13% to 718bln euros in 2021. In the 27 EU countries, the growth rate was 16%. 90% of the population now use the internet and 76% also shop online. This is evident from the recently published European E-Commerce Report by EuroCommerce and Ecommerce Europe, which contains detailed figures on e-commerce in 37 countries on the European continent.

Irish grocery sales decline amid rising inflation: Kantar
Irish grocery sales fell by 4.9% in the 12 weeks to 12 June 2022, as grocery price inflation reached its highest level of 6.5% since February 2013, in the latest 12 weeks ended 12 June, according to latest data from Kantar. Rising prices could add €453 to the average annual grocery bill, a figure over €100 higher than predicted in early May, Kantar noted.

LCGB announce agreement over new collective contract
The Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) has issued a press release to announce that they reached an agreement over a three-year collective contract with supermarket chain Lidl Luxembourg. The agreement thus prolongs an already existing contract and stays in effect from 1 September 2022 until 31 August 2025.

Belgium: Lidl supermarket to start phasing out paper receipts
Users of the Lidl Plus app will be able to opt to receive a digital receipt when doing their shopping as a way to phase out paper receipts. In a press release Lidl noted that this option will allow the chain to save 10 tonnes of paper per year that are usually used by Lidl Plus customers, equivalent to 247 trees. “Our main objective is to pave the way towards more responsible consumption while combining it with an improved customer experience”, Julien Wathieu, spokesperson for Lidl Belgium, said in the release.

US: Gerrity’s Supermarkets joins Wakefern grocery cooperative
Pennsylvania grocer Gerrity’s Supermarkets has joined retail grocery cooperative Wakefern Food Corp. Keasbey, New Jersey-based Wakefern, parent of the ShopRite supermarket banner, said that Gerrity’s becomes its 48th member. Plans call for Gerrity’s to convert to the cooperative’s The Fresh Grocer banner, with the new store branding to be Gerrity’s The Fresh Grocer. The transition to the new banner over the next few months also will include the addition of Wakefern’s own-brand products, such as the Bowl & Basket and Paperbird labels.
