The All Pakistan Fruit & Vegetable Exporters, Importers and Merchants Association (PFVA) has suggested an exchange of surplus potato crops for wheat from Russia. Patron in Chief of PFVA, Waheed Ahmad, said that country has a bumper crop of potato this year. It produced around 7.5 million tons against the domestic demand of 4 million ton, showing a surplus of around 3 million ton for export.
Waheed: ”The Russian market has been a lucrative international market for Pakistani potatoes for many years. Since our country is also facing a wheat shortage this year, this is a unique opportunity of exporting potatoes in exchange for imported wheat from Russia. The exchange of both the crops between the two countries can be made on a barter basis, so that the country does not to have to spend valuable foreign exchange under the prevailing poor economic conditions.”
