Peruvian authorities find over two tons of cocaine hidden in asparagus crates

Peruvian authorities have seized 2.2 tons of cocaine hidden in crates of asparagus that were to be shipped by sea to the Netherlands. Police said they arrested seven Peruvians suspected of being involved in the smuggling operation and issued arrest warrants for two Albanian citizens.

“We have seized 2.2 tons of cocaine, which were to be shipped by sea to Rotterdam, the Netherlands,” through the port of Callao near Lima, head of the narcotics department, Colonel Cesar Echevarria stated, adding that the operation was led by two people of Albanian nationality

“This network has connections in Colombia, Ecuador and Albania.” Since the beginning of this year, the Peruvian police have seized about 35 tons of drugs. Peru is one of the largest cocaine-producing countries in the world, with an official production of about 400 tons per year.
