According to an announcement from Fundecitrus, the 2022/23 orange crop in the citrus belt of São Paulo and Triângulo/Sudoeste Mineiro, the main orange producing region in the world, is estimated at 316.95 million boxes (40.8 kg).
The growth is 20.53% compared to the previous harvest (finished in 262.97 million cases), which represents an increase of 1.11% in relation to the average production of the last ten years. The prospect of a better harvest indicates that, in general, the orchards managed to recover from the climatic adversities, including drought and frost, which occurred in 2020 and 2021 and caused two consecutive small harvests.
According to the coordinator of Fundecitrus' Harvest Estimation Research (PES), Vinícius Trombin, the result of these years was the discontinuity of the biennial production cycle, characterized by the annual alternation between high and low harvests. “The rains recorded in recent months played a fundamental role in the composition of this production expectation. If this number is confirmed, finally, the transition from negative to positive biennials will be observed,” he explains.
