The directors of the Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas), Eduardo Brandão and Luiz Rafaelli have asked for support in the fight against citrus canker in the state of São Paulo.
Brandão has stated that the Association requests reinforcement in the inspection of the production areas and in the export-oriented lemon packing houses. Lemon is one of the most exported fruits in Brazil, in the first quarter of 2022, almost 37,000 tons were sent to the international market. The presence of this pest is a major commercial threat and may harm shipments of fruit to the foreign market.
For Brandão, it is necessary that this reinforcement in inspection be done as soon as possible in a rigorous way and that the applicable penalties be applied to those producers who are not following the norms of the legislation in the control of the pest.
