US: High-performing grocery stores translate success to online space
Supermarkets that are high performers in the brick-and-mortar realm also tend to be sales catalysts in the online grocery arena, new research from strategic advisory firm Brick Meets Click shows. Among nearly 950 stores from 45 U.S. retail banners, conventional supermarkets in the top-performing quartile generated average weekly online grocery sales of $43,895, 6.3 times higher than the median sales of $6,934 for stores in the other quartiles, according to the latest findings of the Brick Meets Click eGrocery Performance Benchmarking 2021 Wave.

US: Kroger launches Ocado ‘spoke’ facility in central Ohio
The Kroger Co. has opened an Ocado-automated “spoke” e-commerce fulfillment facility to help process online grocery orders in central Ohio. Located on Shook Road in Lockbourne, Ohio, the 61,000-square-foot spoke will work with Kroger’s 375,000-square-foot, Ocado-automated customer fulfillment center (CFC) in Monroe, Ohio, and serve as a last-mile cross-dock site, the supermarket giant said.

Shareholders of Carrefour Brasil approved the acquisition of Grupo BIG Brasil SA, according to a securities filing. The local unit of the French retail giant announced on March 2021 the acquisition of Grupo BIG for roughly 7.5bln reais ($1.52bln) from Walmart and investment firm Advent International.

Turkish fast delivery firm Getir to cut 14% of staff - source
Turkish fast grocery delivery company Getir plans to cut 14% of its staff globally, a source with the knowledge of the matter told Reuters. Founded in 2015, Istanbul-based Getir operates in around 50 cities across seven European countries, the United States as well as all major cities in its home country. The source said the decision was taken due to rising global inflation and costs.

Carrefour denies rumours about sale of Polish branch
Several Polish media outlets reported that a sales agreement was reached with Mid Europa Partners. That investor is also a shareholder of the Polish e-commerce platform Allegro. In addition, a second buyer was said to be involved: a real estate fund of Griffin Capital Partners showed interest in the real estate of the supermarket group. According to website Dlahandlu, talks with Mid Europa Partners have been going on since this autumn. However, Carrefour denies the rumours: to RetailDetail, the retailer says it is not selling the Polish division.

More than a fifth of Britons struggling as grocery price inflation hits 13-year high
More than a fifth of households in Great Britain say they are struggling to make ends meet as the price of the weekly grocery shop rises 7%, the highest level of inflation in 13 years. Nine in 10 people say they are worried about the rising price of groceries, according to the market research group Kantar, putting the issue in second place behind concerns about energy bills as the cost of living crisis hits families hard.

Croatian retailers end 2021 positively, Konzum maintains leadership
All of the biggest retailers in Croatia reported revenue growth in 2021, with market leader Konzum managing to keep its main rivals - Lidl and SPAR - at a distance. Konzum, the grocery retail chain owned by Fortenova Group, confirmed its leadership position in the market with a turnover of HRK10.71bln (€1.4bln) - which went up by 6.75%, year on year, according to data reported by T-Portal. The company reported a net profit of HRK40.34mln (€5.3mln) - a significant improvement on the previous year, which ended with a net loss of HRK129.5mln (€17.2mln).
