Onion grower/shipper promotes organics & sustainability

Peri & Sons Farms of Yerington, Nevada will exhibit in Booth #107 at Organic Produce Summit (OPS) in Monterey, California, July 13-14, 2022. With the pandemic still lingering in the rear view mirror, consumers continue seeking organic produce options as part of a healthy lifestyle to bolster immunity and support earth-friendly farming. The farm feels OPS is the best venue to promote its organic products and new sustainable packaging options.

“We’ve exhibited at this event from its inception because OPS offers organic farms a unique opportunity to engage with an audience focused on and passionate about organic produce and sustainability in a more intimate setting,” said Teri Gibson, director of marketing and customer relations for the farm.

Peri & Sons Farms reduced the amount of packaging on consumer products without compromising food safety, shelf life or visual appeal.

The Peri family’s organic onion program provides a wide variety of USDA certified organic onions, including red, white, yellow, sweet, Sweetie Sweet® and Sunions® as well as shallots, cipollinis and garlic. All the onions are hand-harvested to reduce nicks and bruises, promote maximum shelf life and reduce food waste.

“Where people once thought of organics solely as a way to avoid pesticides, now people see organics as a path to a healthier mind, body and planet. And with younger consumers driving this consciousness, the organic produce sector will likely continue to experience growth—maybe not the spikes seen recently during the pandemic—but long-term steady growth,” Gibson said.

As a certified sustainable operation, all Peri & Sons Farms’ products support an agricultural system that avoids synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and promotes a more biodiverse ecosystem, with attention to the health of waterways, soil, air, wildlife, farm workers, community and the climate.

Peri & Sons Farms has instituted changes to its packaging allowing the company to save material, which means limiting what’s going into landfills. “Procuring affordable sustainable packaging for produce is challenging, but we are dedicated to moving forward on this front,” Gibson said. The company recently launched the Earthbag, a biodegradable, compostable, 100-percent plastic free package and new earth-friendly packages for its gourmet line of onions that are biodegradable and compostable.

With deep farming roots going back more than a century, the fourth generation of the Peri family is still doing what it loves—sustainably and safely growing, packing and shipping premium and organic onions.

It offers premium pesticide residue-free onions and USDA certified onions through a straight-line process that reduces transportation risks and saves time and money, allowing the farm to be a one-stop-shop for customers’ needs.
