Harvest was delayed by ten days

An exceptional season for the melon of the Italian Mundial Consortium

"The season of our Mundial melon is running smoothly. Prices are high and stable, thanks to the unusual weather for the time of year. Initially this aspect worried us, but in the end the weather proved to be an ally," said Domenico Raneri, president of the Sicilian Consortium of the Mundial melon.

"The harvest and sales were delayed this year by about ten days or a little more," continued Raneri. "However, this allowed us to commercialize our melon at a better pace. Volumes in this first phase are in line with previous years and the quality is perhaps even a little better thanks to the long sunny days that followed a period of relatively low temperatures for Sicilian spring. This allowed the sugar to form more slowly in the fruit and the melons now have an exceptionally sweet flavor."

The member companies of the Mundial Consortium are Fonteverde, Chiaramonte, Fruttomania e La Nuova Falconara srl, Cooperativa San Tommaso, MasterFruit, OrtoBig, Salfrutta and Società Agricola Semplice G.R.A.L.

"What we thought would be a problem, namely the climate that delayed the harvest, turned out to be an ally. This has avoided overproduction, which over the years has often pushed prices down for our growers. This does not mean low production, though, because now the weather is stable and the harvest is running at full speed, at least with regard to our growers."

"The flow of supplies to retail stores is following the pre-established programming, while the demand from the wholesale markets from north to south is uninterruptedly strong. The focus on quality products from Sicily is remarkable at the moment, but with the arrival of the northern Italian melon, demand will inevitably fall and in the coming days we will see to what extent."

"Both sales and grower prices are high, with the average ranging from €1.50 to €2.00 per kilo, depending on the calibers. This is positive and it rewards our efforts as a consortium for our companies, who have long deserved a fine year like this. The added value of being part of the Mundial melon family continues to give great satisfaction. And we are happy to share that benefit with the entire supply chain and with those who have placed their trust in us," concluded Raneri.
