Birmingham is into South Asian Alphonso mangoes

The mango season has arrived in Birmingham. There is a particular variety that mango fans are going crazy for - the Alphonso. The Alphonso is only available from the end of May to mid-June, and is highly sought after. As scores of Brummies descend on Asian shops to get their fix, stock can sometimes sell out in hours.

Founded in 2010 by business partners Sujay Sohani and Subodh Joshi, Stratford Road based SKVP specialises in vegetarian and vegan Indian food. They have since opened eight restaurants, with a further three coming this year.

Sujay revealed exactly when the best time is to get Alphonso mangoes: "The fruit is coming really nicely, pretty much fresh. We are in prime season from May 10, the second week of June is the prime season, when the best of the mangoes comes in.
