Germany decreased its purchase of Spanish watermelon by 41 million kilos in the last three years

In 2021, Almeria, Murcia, and Valencia accounted for 84.55% of the total volume of watermelons exported by Spain

Spanish watermelon exports grew by 76.09 million kilos between 2019 and 2021, going from 920.52 million kilos in 2019 to 996.61 million kilos last year when they generated revenues of 49.23 million euro.

This increase in Spain's watermelon exports was mainly due to the increase in purchases from countries such as France, the United Kingdom, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the Czech Republic.

Almeria, Murcia, and Valencia were the three provinces that exported the most watermelon in 2021, accounting for 84.55% of the total volume shipped by Spain.

Almeria exported 49.62% of the total, with a volume of 494.49 million kilos, which it sold for 233.16 million euro and an average price of €0.47/kg.

It was followed by Murcia, which accounted for 24.13% of the total, with 240.53 million kilos that were sold for 99.65 million euros at an average price of € 0.41/kg.

Valencia ranked third with 10.8% of the total exported. In 2021 it shipped 107.7 million kilos to international markets, worth 59.66 million euro and an average price of € 0.55/kg.

The Spanish watermelon's main destinations
Germany is the largest customer of Spanish watermelon, receiving 33.65% of the total. In the last year, it bought a total of 335.43 million kilos of watermelons from Spain for 163.31 million euro and an average price of € 0.49/kg.

However, it should be noted that the country has reduced its purchases of watermelon from Spain in the last three years by 11.5% or 41.67 million kilos.

France is the second-biggest buyer of Spanish watermelon with 163.46 million kilos. The value of French purchases stood at 77.18 million euro and their average price was € 0.47/kg.

The United Kingdom was the third-biggest destination for the Spanish watermelon. Last year it bought a total of 82.54 million kilos for 39.72 million euro and an average price of € 0.48/kg.
